Rectangles are bouts of sideways trading action, or a distinct lack of action. When assets are trading within rectangles, it typically reaches a point of trader exhaustion before the breakout occurs.
These trading ranges can sometimes last weeks to months, before a breakout. These structures are neutral, but can act as points where reversals take place. After consolidation a reversal or strong continuation will follow.
