Coinbase Has Acquired Blockr.io

An an interesting development today, San Francisco-based Coinbase has acquired blockchain explorer Blockr.io.

The company wrote in an official blog post Monday:

As Coinbase continues to grow, we’re always keeping an eye out for other companies and individuals making waves in digital currency and helping make bitcoin easy to use. One such company is Blockr.io, a popular block explorer service that caught our eye earlier this year with its sleek, intuitive design and API. Blockr.io parses the bitcoin blockchain and presents the data to users in an easy to read way.

As part of the deal — of which no financial terms were disclosed — the two employees responsible for the design, development, and upkeep of Blockr.io will be joining the Coinbase team.

They’re programmer Sašo Matejina and designer Samo Drole. They’ve relocated from Slovenia to California to join the other 40 employees at Coinbase, and they’ve got big plans ahead of them.

At Coinbase, both Matejina and Drole will be responsible for the continued development of the Coinbase API — something the company hopes will be the “premier tool” for developers look to build atop bitcoin.

As the two transition their work focus to Coinbase, the Blockr.io website will operate as normal. It’s unclear what the long-term plans for the service will be, however.
